Mit der Praxis des Instant Composition Conducting bespielt das VIENNA IMPROVISERS ORCHESTRA einen Diskurs der nicht-notierten experimentellen Komposition und komplexen improvisierten Musik für Großensembles. ICC, das von Butch Morris' Methode des Handzeichen-Dirigats Conduction ausgeht, wurde von Michael Fischer zu einer umfassenden Praxis entwickelt: 1. absolute und ausschließliche ad hoc Kreation vonseiten des Ensembles wie des Conductors, 2. keine Proben, nur ein kurzes Try-out der Handzeichen vor Konzertbeginn, 3. das Staging erfolgt nach Instrumentengruppen, 4. es werden wenige (ca. 20) Handzeichen verwendet, welche 5. sparsam eingesetzt werden, 6. die Instant Compositions haben narrative Verläufe von 35 –50 Minuten und, 7. jedes Konzert weist eine kuratierte, neue Ensemblekonstellation auf und bezieht meist zumindest eine*n neue*n Musiker*in ein.
Das VIO trat auf beim Moers Festival, Wien Modern, Music Unlimited Festival, Festival Artacts, im Porgy & Bess, Brut Wien, Klima Biennale Wien sowie an zentralen Orten der bildenden Kunst wie Angewandte Interdisciplinary Lab/Die Angewandte Wien, Künstlerhaus Wien, Belvedere 21, Vienna Art Week Festival, u.v.a..
2025 veröffentlichte das VIO die LP „VIENNA IMPROVISERS ORCHESTRA live at moers festival 2022“.
Das VIENNA IMPROVISERS ORCHESTRA wurde von Michael Fischer 2004 gegründet; es ist eines der frühesten und kontinuierlich arbeitenden Impovisationsorchester weltweit.
MICHAEL FISCHER, künstlerischer Leiter und Instant composition conductor des VIO, arbeitet an der Sprachimmanenz von Klängen und deren dramatischer Evidenz am Tenorsaxophon, am von ihm entwickelten Feedback-Saxophone, sowie an Soundscapes/fixed media Kompositionen in Zusammenarbeit mit Schriftsteller:innen experimenteller Literatur. Als Instant composition conductor leitet er internationale Improvisationsorchester und temporäre Großensembles für Festivals und Guest-lectures in Europa, Kanada, den USA und Japan, u.a. an der Johns Hopkins Univ. Maryland/USA, Univ. of California Irvine, Festival International de Improvisación Madrid, Wien Modern, Deriva Jazz Festival/ES, Traumzeitfestival/DE, Creative Music Festival/JAP, Renzo Piano Building/IT, Univ. für Musik u. darst. VIENNA IMPROVISERS ORCHESTRA
With the praxis of Instant Composition Conducting, the VIENNA IMPROVISERS ORCHESTRA engages in a special discourse of unnotated experimental composition and complex improvised music for large ensembles. Instant Composition Conducting, which is based on Butch Morris' method of hand sign conducting called Conduction, was developed by Michael Fischer into a praxis that follows certain principles: 1. absolute ad hoc creation - on the part of both the ensemble and the conductor; there are no prepared or agreed-upon modules/designs. 2. no rehearsals, only a short try-out of the hand signs before the concert begins. 3. the ensemble is grouped according to instruments, 4. only few - approx. 20 - hand signs are used, which are 5. implemented sparingly in the process, 6. the instant compositions have narrative progressions of 35–50 minutes, 6. each concert features a new ensemble constellation and usually includes at least one new musician.
The VIO has been a guest at the Moers Festival, Wien Modern, the Music Unlimited Festival, the Artacts Festival, the Porgy & Bess, Brut Wien, Klima Biennale Wien and important spaces for the visual arts such as Belvedere21, Künstlerhaus Wien, Angewandte Interdisciplinary Lab/Die Angewandte Wien, Vienna Art Week Festival, Art Brut Center Gugging, and others.
In 2025, the VIO released the LP VIENNA IMPROVISERS ORCHESTRA live at moers festival 2022.
The VIENNA IMPROVISERS ORCHESTRA was founded by Michael Fischer in 2004; it is one of the earliest and most continuously active improvisation orchestras in the world.
MICHAEL FISCHER, art. dir. and instant composition conductor of the VIO, works on the language immanence of sounds and their dramatic evidence on the tenor saxophone and the feedback-saxophone he developed since 1999, on soundscapes/fixed media compositions with authors of experimental poetry, and, as an instant composition conductor, with international improvisation orchestras and temporary large ensembles for guest-lectures and festivals in Europe, Canada, the USA, and Japan, f.e. at the Johns Hopkins Univ.
