HABEN UND BRAUCHEN IN VIENNA is the title of a discussion and action network of independent artists that was launched in Berlin in 2011, accompanied by a manifesto. HABEN UND BRAUCHEN IN VIENNA, which is based on this Berlin initiative, is now taking place at Künstlerhaus 1050 with its new artistic director Tim Voss at the helm. The various projects planned in this series address the current conditions of artistic production in Vienna as well as the accessibility of art institutions. The Künstlerhaus 1050 will be open for encounters and exchanges between 60 largely local artistic and socio-cultural initiatives that were invited in an open call to dedicate space to their projects. Leading players from the independent cultural scene will produce and implement exhibitions, cooking shows, workshops, performances, concerts and symposia on-site.
HABEN UND BRAUCHEN IN VIENNA encourages the participating actors to share the ideas and production conditions of their own independent artistic, intellectual and visual work in this city. HABEN UND BRAUCHEN IN VIENNA backs the scene of independent cultural workers in self-organization and formulating their concerns.
In light of their precarious working conditions it is not so much about enabling them to function better in a system that is constantly threatening their livelihood. Our goal is more to inform them what they need and what they can get to be able to work. In the spirit of common goods the Wiener Perspektive will be opening its first artist commons model – seven performers and collective will use the facilities of Künstlerhaus 1050 as rehearsal, working and presentation space – with a conference that seeks to trigger a dialogue on jointly used spaces and goods.
The results of this and further on-site productions will be presented to the public throughout the project period on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays.
Seven curatorial collectives will work on exhibitions alternating every two weeks in a reconstruction of the Passagegalerie, the former exhibition space of the Künstlerhaus located in the Karlsplatz underground station. The openings of the exhibitions will take place on Thursday evenings, alternating with discussion formats such as the Rote Wand (red wall), a series of discussions among artists. Friday evenings will feature communal cooking and dining. As part of a weekly cooking event two teams will present various initiatives and projects related to HABEN UND BRAUCHEN IN VIENNA. Interviews moderated for the independent Radio Orange and Ö1 Art Radio will provide insights into their practices. On Saturday afternoons LebensCafé Diamant, run by migrants, will welcome visitors from the Künstlerhaus 1050 – in the evenings concerts and performances will be offered.
HABEN UND BRAUCHEN IN VIENNA is a dynamic and elaborate artistic polylogue of communal work modes, social practices, specific characteristics, political concerns and, last not least, also recipes, pots and pans.
The display of the HABEN UND BRAUCHEN IN VIENNA-architecture was created by the Viennese artist Gerald Moser (Wunderkammer) designed and supported by the private brewery Stiegl.
HABEN UND BRAUCHEN IN VIENNA will receive support from the Vienna Chamber of Labor and the Wiener Städtische Versicherung (Vienna Municipal Insurance) and funding from the Kulturkommission Margareten, the City of Vienna’s Cultural Division and the Austrian Federal Chancellery.
